December 2017 Forecast

Monthly Overview

Welcome to Mystick Physick Astrology, every month we explore the astrology of the current planetary transits across the heavens from a western sidereal perspective.

Be sure to read for your sidereal sun and rising sign, which may be different than the sign you’re accustomed to. Sidereal astrology is different from traditional tropical astrology, so your regular sun and rising signs may not apply in a sidereal reading or forecast.

If you need to look up your sidereal sign placements, use our easy online sidereal calculator to find out for free.

December arrives in the wake of several late-November sign  changes. Mercury recently entered Sagittarius, though he’ll be moving back to Scorpio shortly as he will begin his retrograde in just a few days. For a short while our thoughts may take on a more cerebral and idealistic air before we’re drawn back to deeper contemplation and psychological exploration.

Venus also shifted gears in late November, moving into Scorpio where she is in detriment and at her weakest. Venus will stay in her weakened state until she leaves for Sagittarius later in the month, on the 21st of December.

And remember that Neptune recently turned direct, even as Uranus retrogrades back into Pisces now on the 1st of December, reactivating the Neptune-Uranus mutual reception we experienced for much of the last eight years, now through the beginning of February 2018.

Mars also changes signs December 1st, moving into Libra and his sign of detriment for nearly the next seven weeks. Expect a lot of activity with not much to show for it over that time frame.

Mars and Uranus oppose each other as they change signs, potentially triggering accidents or other surprise events and more impulsively aggressive behavior than normal. Sudden arguments and destructive impulses are possible, so we’ll need to make an effort to be patient with others.

The first half of that seven week time frame is spent with Mercury retrograde, suggesting that we’ll be doing a lot of review and revision at first, with the good news being that we can spend the second half getting everything in place to move forward once Mars moves into Scorpio in mid January. By then all the planets will be in direct motion, and we’ll have the full strength of the entire known solar system at our backs as we forge ahead on our biggest initiations.

Don’t enter into any agreements or sign any contracts near the 2nd, when the sun squares Neptune and the chance you could be missing information or blind to deception is high. In fact, wait to sign papers at all until after Mercury goes direct, as he’ll be stationing retrograde on the 3rd and you’ll want the planet that rules contracts and commerce on your side during any negotiations.

If you must enter into an agreement right now, stipulate that it is temporary and must be renegotiated at a later date, after Mercury is back up to full strength. Anytime after January 18th is fine. You’ll have a clearer picture of the terms you’ll want by then, and can make a better long term arrangement.

New readers will want to grab a copy of the Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide for this and other helpful tips for navigating Mercury retrograde cycles with grace (and a minimum of fuss).

Mercury stations at 4° Sagittarius, nearly conjunct Saturn at 3° of Sagittarius, the same day as the full moon in Taurus. We’ll be taking steps to ensure our own security in some way at this time, in whatever ways are individually meaningful. Our personal definition of security and what it means to us may be up for re-evaluation and revision at this time, in ways that will have a lasting impact.

This isn’t a good time to begin new projects or endeavors of any kind, really, except for those which involve the review of what you’ve already been doing and the results you’ve been getting. Saturn is the planet of structure and tradition, ruling as it does  both the skeletal system and prolonged periods of time, and his involvement with Mercury at the degree of retrograde suggests that the best use for this full moon involves reviewing, revising, and updating old, outdated structures and traditions.

Any agreement entered into or project begun at this time will likely require tweaking and correction down the road, and stands a higher chance of bringing disappointment in the long run. With Saturn in the picture, anything you start or agree to could have unexpected longevity and may turn out to be difficult to undo.

So, it’s best to delay if at all possible and instead use this time constructively, in a way that aligns with the planetary interplay.

You’ll want to check your own sidereal natal chart for planets or personal points at 3° or 4° of a fire sign or 16° or 17° of Taurus to see how strongly you may be affected by either the retrograde or the full moon. Readers with Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius or Capricorn sun or rising signs will be most affected by Mercury’s retrograde, while readers with Taurus sun or rising signs will be most affected by the full moon.

Readers with a planet or point at 16° or 17° of Taurus or an earth sign will want to watch for something to come to an end within +/- four days of the full moon, likely something you valued very much.

The Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide

This 33 page guide is filled with everything you need to know to rock any retrograde!

News of loss or that brings sadness is possible near the 6th, when Mercury conjoins Saturn in Sagittarius. Alternatively, you may find yourself going back over old ground with something that first came up near the 27th of November, the first time these two met up, and if so, you may not reach anything decisive until closer to January 13th, when they cross paths for the third and final time after Mercury ends his retrograde.

If news does come up for you near this date, it’s possible you’ll want to take action right away. Patience may serve you better, so be sure to consider consequences before acting.

Surprise news may come up near the 10th, just when Mercury returns to Scorpio for the remainder of December. Check to see what House Scorpio occupies in your natal chart for clues to what the news will be about.

There could be confusion or deception around a relationships, partners, or business matters, too.

Mercury meets up with the sun on December 12th just in time for the beginning of Hanukkah, a day we’re all likely to experience the retrograde personally in some way. Travel delays or hiccups, for instance, are ways a Mercury retrograde experience could affect large numbers of people directly, as just one example.

Mercury and Venus team up in Scorpio on the 15th, just as the sun prepares to leave Scorpio for Sagittarius to begin a four week stay. Scorpio babies (both sun and rising signs) may get one last birthday gift before the sun goes, near the 15th & 16th. Surprises are possible.

The new moon in Sagittarius December 18th brings new opportunities for exploration and an invitation to expand our experiences in whatever way we feel drawn or inspired. Anything we begin at this time is likely to have unexpected longevity, with the potential to establish surprising new traditions resulting from sudden changes to the underlying structure upon which the old, tried and true way was based.

Prepare for unanticipated shifts in your most personal values–those which are privately held or spiritual in nature, or even values we may have held unconsciously up to this point.

The sun conjoins Saturn on the 21st, a demanding day with the potential for leaving us exhausted. Readers with Capricorn sun and rising sign especially may be engaged in physically taxing labor near this day. Take care of yourself.

Venus joins the sun, Saturn, and Pluto in Sagittarius the same day for a three and a half week visit. We find beauty and much else to appreciate in foreign cultures and in new, unexplored intellectual territory. Time spent broadening our horizons holds the potential to pay rich dividends during this transit.

Mercury stations direct at 18° sidereal Scorpio the very next day, December 22nd, perfect timing for taking advantage of the new moon in Capricorn January 16th, when he’ll be back up to full strength and all the planets in the solar system will be in direct motion. Be thinking about what ambitious new undertaking you’d like to begin in the new year.

This December new moon, though, will still have lingering Mercury retrograde influence around it, so consider putting off beginning Mercury-ruled activities until the week following, after we get around the bumpy days at the end of the retrograde. You’ll want to give them some space if at all possible before making your new moon in Sagittarius initiation.

Venus conjoins Saturn on the 25th, a potentially challenging aspect over the Christmas holiday and the start of Kwanzaa for readers in committed long term relationships. The degree to which we value our commitments may be tested or challenged over these few days, though if the relationship is healthy it will likely withstand the test–in fact, we may renew our commitments as a result of whatever challenges we face, if there are no weak spots. Weaker or troubled relationships sometimes end under Venus-Saturn conjunctions.

Alternatively, financial constraints could dampen our celebrations at this time. Instead, find holiday spirit in the appreciation of longstanding traditions.

Finally, on December 28th Mars reaches out a friendly hand to Neptune in Aquarius, coloring the year’s final days with the drive to find inspiring ways to be of selfless service in the world. Our humanitarian instincts are ignited and we feel driven to meet them in our own individual ways.

The Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide

Want to rock the retrograde like a BOSS? Get yours now!

Aries

The full moon brings an income source to an end, or if you took steps to begin a side hustle of any sort at the last new moon in Taurus in late May you may begin to see your efforts pay off now. The new moon in Sagittarius December 18th highlights your solar 9th House, bringing an opportunity related to publishing, broadcasting, higher education or long distance travel within +/- 4 days.

Taurus

Mercury will station retrograde in your solar 1st House of image, appearance, and the physical body. This is not the right time to make purchases for your wardrobe, or to buy electronics, big ticket items and anything with moving parts. It is, however, the right time to go through your kitchen, your garage and and especially your closet to identify and collect those things you can yard sale or list to local buy/sell/trade groups, or donate to charity. The December 18th new moon highlights your 8th House of other people’s money. This would be your best opportunity all year to make a new start with your financial picture.

Gemini

The December 3rd full moon in Taurus lights your 12th House of privacy and seclusion, bringing a highly personal matter to conclusion within +/- 4 days, You may be wrapping up a project you’ve been working on in private. Your ruler, Mercury, stations retrograde the same day, so expect things to slow down over the coming three weeks. At the new moon December 18th a partnership opportunity could come up, and if so wait to give your answer or make a commitment until well after Mercury stations direct, December 22nd. A partnership or romantic commitment made near Christmas day would likely be for the long term, so it’s important to know what you’d be getting into.

Cancer

You could fulfill a long held hope or dream near the full moon December 3rd, though if you do you’ll want to keep an eye on the outcome over the next three weeks as you may need to make tweaks or revisions. Alternatively, it’s possible a friendship comes to an end near this time, but if so, it’s likely not permanent. A good friend may simply move away at this time and return to your life at a later point, for example. The new moon in Sagittarius activates your 6th House of work, health, pets and daily routines, marking an opportunity to establish a committed health practice or exercise regime, one that you could commit to for the long haul. You’ll want to wait to make your initiation until a little later–perhaps the day after Christmas–but don’t wait for New Years Day to begin. You’ll have better chances for sticking to your plans long term if you start before then.

Leo

The December 3rd full moon brings a career matter to a conclusion within +/- 4 days, or if you’ve been working on a professional project you can use this time to complete your work. Keep an eye on performance and execution in the coming three weeks in case you need to make adjustments or corrections. Then on the 18th the new moon in Sagittarius highlights your 5th House of romance and creativity–begin a new creative project in the days after Christmas, or consider taking up a new and interesting hobby.

Virgo

Your ruler, Mercury, retrogrades just in time for the full  moon December 3rd, triggering a three week long slow down in your international sector. You may be working to meet publishing, travel or legal commitments in the coming weeks, and with your ruler retrograde you’ll want to double and triple check your work for errors. The new moon December 18th heralds an opportunity to begin a home improvement project to family activity, or perhaps to change something about your home or property situation.

Libra

The full moon December 3rd brings a financial matter to conclusion, likely related to a loan, tax, insurance or inheritance. Alternatively, a bonus or commission could come your way. If you have the opportunity to travel to somewhere nearby in the days after the new moon December 18th, take it. Just pad your travel itinerary with extra time and keep your schedule loose in case you encounter travel delays or detours.

Scorpio

A partnership or joint project may be coming to an end within +/- 4 days of the full moon December 3rd. If you have a marriage or partnership affected, know that it may not be a permanent situation, as Mercury stations retrograde the same day. This offers you the chance for reconciliation or a rekindled partnership down the road. If you wrap up a joint project, the next three weeks will be your time for tweaks and corrections.

Sagittarius

A work or health related matter may be ending in near the 3rd, or a routine you’ve maintained for some time could be over near this time. With the new moon in Sagittarius activating your 1st House of this December may be the perfect time to make changes to your daily eating habits by eliminating trouble foods or ingredients near the December 3rd full moon and beginning an exercise regime after Mercury goes direct, in the days just after Christmas. Just don’t wait until the new year to begin your commitment–it serves you better to start early.

Capricorn

The full moon December 3rd lights your 5th House of true love and creativity, and conjoins your ruler, Saturn, just as Mercury begins his retrograde. A creative project may be coming to fruition at this time, one highly personal to you. The new moon December 18th marks a perfect opportunity to begin a new solo project, begin just after the Christmas holiday.

Aquarius

A home, property or family matter may be coming to a conclusion within +/- 4 days of the full moon December 3rd. Then at the new moon, watch for an opportunity in your social sector to arise. You could make a new friend near this time.

Pisces

The December 3rd full moon lights your solar 3rd House. A neighbor or sibling may be leaving for a period of time, or even move away, or you may be putting the finishing touches on a writing assignment even. If the latter is so, use the next three weeks to review your work and make any necessary adjustments or revisions. There’s a risk of travel delays near the 3rd. At the new moon on the 18th, watch for a career opportunity to arise. If you can, delay your decision until just after Christmas. If you decide to accept then, you’ll be in a stronger position. Alternatively, if you’ve been considering a career change of some sort, make your initiation then, after Mercury is past the unpredictable final days of his retrograde.

about me

about me

My astrological explorations began in 1994 and have taken me on an amazing, decades-long journey of discovery beginning with the teachings of Sybil Leek and continuing with those of Joanna Woolfolk, Nicholas Campion, Max Heindel, Ptolemy, Susan Miller, Carol Rushman, Steven Forrest, Cyril Fagan, Robert Powell, and Dane Rudhyar, to name just a few. I began reading privately for family and close friends in 2003 and following a profoundly transformational spiritual experience opened my practice to the public through Mystick Physick in 2014.

Now more than ever I see the need in the world for the life and soul guidance that astrology can offer to those who seek to understand its sublime language. Collectively we are waking up and determined to find meaning and purpose in our daily lives. This is the gift that astrology offers us.
