May 2019 Overview - Sidereal Monthly Horoscope

Welcome to Sidereal Insights, every month we explore the astrology of the current planetary transits across the heavens from a western sidereal perspective. Be sure to read your sidereal monthly horoscope for your sidereal sun and rising sign, which may be different than the sign you’re accustomed to. Sidereal astrology is different from traditional tropical astrology, so your regular sun and rising signs may not apply in a sidereal reading or forecast.

May opens as the annual retrograde slowdown is getting underway, with three slower moving planets--Jupiter, Pluto, and Saturn--all shifting gears for the coming four to five months.

This overall change of pace affects readers with Pisces, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius sun or rising signs more than others, though we’ll all likely feel the retrogrades in some way.

Progress may be slower in many areas of life, but opportunities for do-overs, re-examination, healing, and renewed commitment to long term goals will greet us as we navigate the coming months.

Mercury sextile Mars, Mercury square Saturn retrograde

Travel and communication may be fraught with delays, obstacles or upheaval during the opening days of May as Mercury navigates a minefield of challenges just before leaving Pisces.

Restrictive conditions resulting from past obligations or lessons we’ve resisted learning are likely to temporarily thwart the ability to engage in commercial, intellectual, or verbal exchange when retrograde Saturn exerts himself May 1st.

Mercury square Pluto retrograde, Mercury trine Jupiter retrograde

Be aware that whatever travel and communication issues arise as we enter May could change quite dramatically fairly quickly as Mercury negotiates with both retrograde Pluto and retrograde Jupiter the very next day, May 2nd.

With Mercury involved heavily with so many influences in such a short span of time, this configuration of aspects should play out fairly quickly. Virgo and Gemini readers (and those with Virgo/Gemini ascendant) are likely to feel this whirlwind the most.

Mercury enters Aries

Mercury moves into Aries on May 3rd for a two week spin through the fire sign, enlivening both conversation and the pace of travel and commerce as he rushes through.

Expect lots of feisty conversation--including outright flareups of temper--during Mercury’s time here as Mars is out of bounds.

Venus square Pluto retrograde, Venus trine Jupiter retrograde

The 9th takes on a rather romantic and dreamy quality normally good for a romantic escape or an evening at the theater, but retrograde Pluto may intend a change of heart before the magic fades.

Venus enters Aries

When Venus leaves Pisces for Aries on the 11th she leaves her sign of exaltation for her sign of detriment. This reversal in expression can mean where we were once willing to sacrifice our own desires for the greater good, now our own selfish needs and wants are demanding to take precedence. We want what we want and we’re more inclined to do what’s necessary to get it, regardless of other people’s preferences.

Mercury sextile Neptune, Sun enters Taurus

The sun moves into Taurus May 15th, beginning his annual tour through the sign of the bull. Our need for security takes precedence during the sun’s stay here, and we may hesitate to venture outside established comfort zones.

Being proactive about finding clarity in your communications with others now, especially around Aquarian themed matters--like technology, social justice, the future--can help you better navigate challenges which are likely to arise later in the month, when these two planets challenge each other.

Mercury trine Pluto retrograde, Venus conjunct Uranus, Full Moon in Scorpio, Mercury enters Taurus

The full moon May 18th carries the potential to transform our understanding of events or circumstances in the area of life represented by Scorpio in the natal chart. Power dynamics may be undergoing change in such a way that the flow of communication changes, too. Meetings or discussions could bear unexpected fruit.

Later the same day Mercury moves into Taurus, taking a two week long spin through the sign of the bull. If discussions derail or negotiations stall, slow down--you can make more progress in a few weeks, when Mercury moves out of stubborn Taurus and into his own, more flexible sign of Gemini.

Sun conjunct Mercury

The 21st is an important day when the Sun and Mercury meet up in earthy Taurus. Readers with Gemini or Virgo sun or rising sign may want to take note, as they could find themselves in the spotlight in some way. In fact, if you need to make an impression, use this day to do it.

More generally, we can find ourselves caught up in a narrative about personal possessions, attached to the stories we’ve woven around our belongings and around our own sense of self worth.

Look to 5° Taurus in your natal chart for a clue as to how directly this may affect you. Readers with Leo sun or Leo rising will want to take note, too--with this conjunction activating the professional and personal houses respectively, you may find yourself in a position to clearly communicate your needs, which is the first step in getting what you want..

Mercury out of bounds

Mercury joins Mars out of bounds for the remainder of that feisty Martian’s stay north of the Tropic of Cancer, from May 26th through June 17th.

During these weeks we are inclined to innovative thinking in any field requiring a skill for analysis, problem solving, or communication. On the flip side, it’s easy to become obsessed with stories, whether in literature, film, or even the stories we tell about our own lives. We are prone to misconstruing words and blowing things out of proportion.

With Mars also out of bounds making us prone to overreacting aggressively or angrily, or seeing rivalry and competition everywhere, it is ever more important to make the effort to be fully present in our interactions with others. In all interpersonal relations make the effort to understand fully what the other person wants to communicate to you without projecting your own narrative or motivations.

Mercury square Neptune

When Mercury squares Neptune on the 29th expect to be disabused of any illusions you may have formed last month when the pair met up in Aquarius. Embrace getting at the truth of matters now, as it will help you move forward more easily later on.

Venus sextile Neptune, Mercury opposed Jupiter retrograde, Venus trine Saturn retrograde

The final days of May take on a dreamy, nostalgic atmosphere as Venus, Neptune and retrograde Saturn play with our collective sense of time and recollection. We’re much more likely to attach ourselves to personal narratives about past events and may react poorly if that narrative is challenged by facts or reality.

about me

My astrological explorations began in 1994 and have taken me on an amazing, decades-long journey of discovery beginning with the teachings of Sybil Leek and continuing with those of Joanna Woolfolk, Nicholas Campion, Max Heindel, Ptolemy, Susan Miller, Carol Rushman, Steven Forrest, Cyril Fagan, Robert Powell, and Dane Rudhyar, to name just a few. I began reading privately for family and close friends in 2003 and following a profoundly transformational spiritual experience opened my practice to the public through Mystick Physick in 2014.

Now more than ever I see the need in the world for the life and soul guidance that astrology can offer to those who seek to understand its sublime language. Collectively we are waking up and determined to find meaning and purpose in our daily lives. This is the gift that astrology offers us.

I’m Phaedra, astrologer and artist of Mystick Physick. I make my home in Idaho’s gorgeous Treasure Valley with my husband of 20 years, our dog Rocket and cat Jet.
